From 1974 to 1977 the races of Targa Florio were valid for the
Italian championship. The champions, who had help to create the
legend of Targa Florio, were fewer than before: the race was becoming
more and more a regional competition. The races from 1974 to 1976
kept on attracting fans from everywhere, although in a minor tone.
In 1977 the race should consist of 8 laps, but it was interrupted
during the fifth lap, because of an accident along the route: it
was the bitter confirmation that the Circuit of Madonie Mountains
was not able to bear this kind of competition. The judgment of
International Committee was confirmed: the 15th of May is the last
date of this historical competition. Today it can be still considered
as the oldest race in the World, thanks to all of the sporting
events, which celebrate the Circuit every year: Rally or Targhe
Storiche.
